Jonathon Atwood

Jonathon Atwood was born and raised in Sterling Heights, Michigan; his dance training did not begin until he attended a Jazz class at Wayne State University.  From there, his interest in the kinetic arts blossomed when he discovered the beauty of ballet.  A degree in linguistics was put on hold when he decided to accept an offer to dance with the Marygrove College Dance Company.  Now a graduate from the college, with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Dance Performance, Jonathon's dance exposure has grown from a few classes in Jazz and Ballet to a much broader perspective of Modern and Contemporary styles; the 2010-2011 season will be Jonathon's first as a dancer with the Detroit Dance Collective, a local contemporary company.  Fusing technical aspects of differing schools of ballet (Vaganova, Royal Academy, Cecchetti) with compatible schools of modern dance (Horton, Limon/Humphrey) Jonathon creates classes that push not just the technique of the student but also the dramatic and musical sensitivity necessary to truly become a dance artist.
